Europe, I must say, totally wins. Art wise anyway. Recently I just returned from a quick trip to France and Italy. And being your average American, I was pretty much amazed. Seriously, I was jealous. America hasn't had that much time, compared to other countries, to have so much history. Vatican, Firenze, Louvre, the churches, the statues. As soon as I saw it, it's almost the reaction of, "You've got to be kidding me!" I fell in love there and I realize I'm not getting that piece of my heart back. As I drove by the plain old church a couple blocks from my home, it looks so plain. And dull and ugly. It would never be anything like the pillars and sculptures. Or paintings. They just stood there like buildings. And I wish I was more directly European, so I could feel proud of that kind of art. Sure, the USA has DC and possibly s few other cool sites. But in Europe, those places a renown around the globe! Nobody cares about Seattle's Art Museum.
But the art. Half the time I was thinking, "What is art?" Could the shallow I see here in this modern world be art? Does it have to have feeling to be art? I love photos, because it's no dealt with. If you get that. In a sketch or painting, it's the artist's originality that makes it differ. In photographs (yes, I do realize that we have all the spiffy techy stuff, but besides that...) Even if you change the angles or lighting, it may be totally different pictures, but it's the same focus of whatever said object is.
Or is it?
I'd love to have pictures one day that will cause emotions. Emotions that you don't get. But you know that there's some sort of turmoil, let it be good or bad.
